The Wish Granter by C. .J. Redwine Book Cover

Summary

The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop.

Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown.

So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself.

But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

Book Review

THE WISH GRANTER is a young adult fantasy set in the same world as The Shadow Queen and is the second book in the Ravenspire series. This time the story takes inspiration from the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin. Be careful what you wish for is, of course, the main motif, and in C. J. Redwine's capable hands, readers have an entertaining read with plenty of danger-filled moments, surprise twists, romance and an evil villain to dislike.

When Ari discovers her twin brother was tricked into trading his soul for a wish granted by Alistair Teague, aka The Wish Granter, in exchange for their safety and the crown, she takes matters into her own hands. Determined to outsmart Teague, she joins forces with the new weapons master in order to bring the Wish Granter down and save her brother along with the kingdom.

The stories say the Wish Granter is an ancient fae creature who can grant you the desire of your heart.
They don’t say that in ten years, he’ll return for your soul.

I knew, after reading and loving The Shadow Queen, that I needed to continue on with this series and I'm so glad I did.

This is my second read by Redwine and I'm discovering that besides writing great protagonists for her books she writes villains you love to despise, just as well. There is just something awesome about a smart and capable heroine taking on a dastardly villain to make you cheer for them. Especially when it's a villain that just makes you want to throw the book at them, and this is the case with THE WISH GRANTER.

Ari Glavan never wanted to be a princess and this is what makes her such a wonderful heroine. Sassy, independent, and resourceful with a heart filled with kindness—Ari is immediately likable. When she suddenly finds herself a royal sister and princess, she doesn't plan on changing herself for anyone, but, when her brother's life is threatened—she'll do whatever it takes to save him, even if that means taking his place.

THE WISH GRANTER also weaves in a touch of romance. Sebastian, the weapons master, is a sympathetic hero with a dark past, one who makes the romance just that much sweeter to read about. With secret ties to Teague's criminal empire, he may be the only hope for Ari to discover Alistair Teague's weakness. Tender and scarred, he's a quiet but fierce hero.

In the End

THE WISH GRANTER is filled with twists and danger, a malicious villain who truly terrifies, and heroine who is just defiant enough to try and bring him down.Entertaining, and perfect for fans old and new, once again Redwine pens another great read in the Ravenspire series. I can't wait to grab up The Traitor Prince, the latest book in these fairytale inspired stories.
