Everless by Sara Holland Book Cover

Book Summary

In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries.

No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever.

But Everless brings more danger—and temptation Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself

Book Review

Welcome to the blog tour for the paperback release of New York Times-bestseller EVERLESS by Sara Holland! Today, I’m thrilled to share with you my review of this gorgeous story.

Set in a lush fantasy world of unique mythology where time is a currency; a world of Alchemists, sorcery and blood magic, EVERLESS weaves a tale filled with breathless romance and treachery.

In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency

One of the standout features of this debut series opener is the myth and worldbuilding of EVERLESS.

Set in a world where blood, currency, and time are linked, Holland creates an exciting and danger-filled world where the value of currency is based on time and is taken in the form of blood—through alchemy and magic, and bound to iron coins where it then can be consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan.

The kingdom of Sempera is rich in legends and throughout the story, bits and pieces of mythology are woven about how a young Alchemist and Sorcerer came to discover how to manipulate time.

Compelling Characters and Vile Villains

When 17-year-old Jules Ember discovers her father is dying she makes a decision that will change everything she knows about herself and cast her into the very heart of danger—by returning to Everless.

Jules is an easy heroine to relate to. I loved seeing her fierce devotion to her father and her determination to uncover the secrets behind the facade the Gerling family hides behind. Through her first-person narration, the dark and twisted world of Everless comes alive along with the mystery surrounding it.

I love well faceted characters, especially villains and EVERLESS is written in a way that keeps you guessing about several character’s motives.

Posing as a servant, Jules finds herself caught between two brothers she thought she would never see again—her childhood friend Roan Gerling and his cruel brother, Liam. There is a touch of forbidden romance but both brothers seem to be hiding something.

Nothing is as it seems at Everless, including the visiting queen of Sempera whose arrival at Everless for a royal wedding brings even more questions and intrigue. It seems as if everyone is hiding something and the machinations that surround the queen only bring Jules dangerously closer to the truth.

In the End

I found Holland’s debut EVERLESS to be an exciting mix of myth, magic, dark-twists, and romance.

A page-turning read perfect for fans of fantasy and world building. Now is the perfect time to read EVERLESS before its sequel, EVERMORE releases at the end of December.
