Sometimes boy meets girl, and the stars align, and their future is laid out neatly before them. Together forever. Meant to be. But Max and Loren are not one of those couples.

Seventeen-year-old Max DuPont is on the verge of becoming a ward of the state and foster kid. Contrary to expectations, Max is not from the "wrong" side of town. He's from a good home in a nice neighborhood, but his mother left after his father lost his job and turned to drinking. Max has been struggling to keep his head above water ever since. All he wants is to survive his senior year, play hockey, and move on to college. When his dad lands himself in jail, Max has no choice but to accept an offer to live with his father's do-gooder attorney, Mr. Larssi. The only contingency is that Max must stay far away from Larssi's beautiful teenage daughter Loren.

Loren is aware that she's had every opportunity in her young adult life—at least, that is, every opportunity her parents designed for her. She excels in academics at a competitive prep school, she never parties, she never dates, and she's a budding ballerina and major hopeful for a Juilliard scholarship. But since her best friend Lily died tragically three months ago, Loren is lost. She knows just how precious life is. But she has no idea how to make the best of it. How can she live—really live—with obsessive parents breathing down her neck…and inviting the only guy who never noticed her to live right under their roof?

Loren's first step in living her own life might be to get Max to notice her. Max's only chance at a solid future without foster care is to keep his distance from Loren. But their chemistry is undeniable. And they can't fight the odds forever.

AGAINST ALL ODDS is both a cute and smart young adult read. The realistic teen issues and heartfelt romance will make you smile, laugh, and sympathize with Max and Loren's growing pains. Completely adorable, a contemporary teen romance with just the right amount of swoon and drama.

The story used a clever and fun plot to keep things interesting. Seventeen-year-old Max DuPont is assigned to Mr. Larssi's care by a social worker when his father is sentenced to a local rehab for driving under the influence. The catch, and it's well done one, is that Mr. Larssi is not only the lawyer and former friend of Max's dad, but he just happens to be Loren's father. Now, not only does Max need to toe-the-line while under his care, when he meets Mr. Larssi's beautiful daughter, he has to fight the immediate attraction he has towards her.

Both Max and Loren are smart and goal driven teens, and both are struggling emotionally. Loren comes across as very driven teen who is suffering emotionally inside from the death of her best friend. Not knowing how to express her pain and coming to terms with it was really well-done. Max is having to deal with a very uncertain future, both in terms of school and a family that is dealing with some very serious issues. He experiences some terrific character growth and won my heart over.

Told through both Max and Loren's alternating points of view, the reader is treated to some really well-done character building. I love getting into the characters thoughts, and fans of the guys POV are going to love being inside Max's head and hearing all those great adolescent, adorably sweet boy-thoughts that make girls want to swoon. Loren is a teen with goals and I loved the fact that she is so passionate about dancing and becoming a Ballerina. Easy to sympathize with, I felt her need for rebelliousness and her emotional conflicts. She easily endeared herself to me.

AGAINST ALL ODDS is a fun, entertaining read that won me over with real teen issues, parental involvement, tons of romantic chemistry and two smart, goal oriented teens to admire. (YAY)!

My Rating: 4 Stars. I like it!
